2008 Girl Scouts and Brownies Operation Cookie Drop Saturday June 14, 2008
Girl Scouts and Brownies from Westchester County, NY and six other Hudson Valley counties donated and shipped 40,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to military members stationed in Iraq and the Middle East.
On Saturday June 14th, several thousand cartons were dropped off at the Valhalla Armory by many local Girl Scout organizations. The US Navy sent two tractor trailers and a pick-up truck to accept the donations and the trucks were loaded to capacity full of cookie cartons. The trucks headed back to Fort Dix and shipment this month to Norfolk, VA and then on to Kuwait. US Navy PR staff will take pictures of the arrival of the cookies overseas.
Among the project leaders from the Girl Scouts were Alison Bergman and Sue Dishart. Lt. JG Todd Stevens and Lt. Lesley Lykins represented the Navy at the several hour session loading up the trucks.
Congresswoman Nita Lowey visited the "Operation" and told the gathering of several hundred Girl Scouts, Brownies, and volunteers "How important their effort is to the servicemen and women overseas".
