LCDR Brett J. Morash USN
LCDR Morash is a native of Franklin, Massachusetts. Graduating from the Massachusetts
Maritime Academy in 1993, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine
Transportation, a U.S. Merchant Marine Third Mate License (Unlimited
Tonnage) and a Commission through the U.S. Merchant Marine Officer Program.
A Distinguished Graduate of Surface Warfare Officer School Division Officer Course, he
reported to the USS Harlan County (LST 1196), home ported at the Little Creek
Amphibious Base, Virginia serving as the Communications and Electronic Maintenance
Officer. He completed operations with the USS Guam Amphibious Readiness Group off
Mogadishu and Kismayo Somalia in 1994. Upon the decommissioning of the Harlan County
in April of 1995, LCDR Morash transferred to USS Detroit (AOE 4).
In April of 1995, LCDR Morash reported to USS Detroit (AOE 4), a Fast Combat Logistics
Ship home ported at Weapon Station Earle (Leonardo) New Jersey. He first served as
Damage Control Assistant and later as the ship's Navigator before transferring to The
College of the Holy Cross NROTC Unit in 1997. During his time on the Detroit he was
deployed to the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea.
LCDR Morash was assigned duties as the Instructor of Navigation while at Holy Cross.
During this time LCDR Morash completed his Master of Arts Degree in Business
Administration from Framingham State College as well as earning a Second Mate License
(Unlimited Tonnage)/1600 ton Master All Oceans. Following this tour he was transferred to
Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport RI in April of 2000.
Completing the U.S. Navy Department Head School with Distinction in October of 2000 he
transferred to USS Barry (DDG 52), home ported in Norfolk VA, as Weapons Officer. While
on USS Barry LCDR Morash developed the U.S. Navy’s semi-fixed virtual gunnery range
and was instrumental in development of the IMPASS gunnery system allowing the Navy to
close the Vieques Puerto Rico gunnery range. LCDR Morash deployed to the Middle East
and Horn of Africa in USS Barry in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In January
2002 he was promoted to become the Combat Systems Officer in USS Barry until
transferring to the Naval War College in February 2004. While assigned to the Barry
LCDR Morash was awarded the 2002 Surface Navy Association’s Arleigh Burke Award for
Operational Excellence, and the coveted Commander Naval Surface Forces Tactician of
the Year Award 2003.
A March 2006 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval War College; he was also awarded
the 2004 Admiral Ike Kidd Distinguished Intelligence Graduate Award, the 2006 Secretary
of the Navy Middendorf II Award for Research, and the 2006 Surface Navy Association
Award for Operational Research. LCDR Morash was concurrently assigned as an
associate fellow on the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group XXIV, which
generates revolutionary operational warfare concepts as well as a fellow on the Naval War
College’s Halsey Group working on special projects. Following the U.S. Naval War
College he was assigned to the USS Shiloh (CG 67) as the Executive Officer in Yokosuka
Japan as part of the Navy’s Forward Deployed Naval Forces.
Following his tour in USS Shiloh he transferred to CTJF Horn of Africa in Djibouti as the
Theater Security Cooperation Branch Chief (CJ-5 Plans) from October 2007 through
March 2008. As the TSC Branch Chief he was responsible for the development of the U.S.
military’s operational and tactical level training and engagement programs for 11 different
East African nations, and Yemen. While in East Africa he personally developed a multi-
million dollar Maritime Center of Excellence in Kenya to develop regional Maritime Safety
and Security in the Horn of Africa, in support in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
Following his tour in Africa he briefly served at the United States Mission to the United
Nations as a Military Advisor where he provided advice and information to the Ambassador
of the United States to the United Nations.
He is currently serving on the faculty of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport RI where he
teaches Operational Planning to military officers, and other members of the U.S.
government. A lifelong scholar he has recently started his studies to pursue a Doctorate
degree in the Humanities at Salve Regina University, Newport RI.
His military decorations include three Naval Commendation Medals, three Navy
Achievement Medals, and numerous campaign devices. LCDR Morash is a life member of
the Naval War College Foundation, and Naval Intelligence
Professionals Organization.
