Brigadier General Paul Genereux, Commander New York Army
National Guard, 42nd Infantry Division, is interviewed by Ken Kraetzer at Tarrytown
NY. The Reintegration event was designed to help soldiers and their families
understand and cope with some of the stresses of returning home after deployment
to a combat zone. About 70 members of the NY National Guard's 2nd Battalion,
108th Infantry who had returned from Afghanistan in October.
The New York National Guard Reintegration Program is an effort to help Soldiers and
their families cope with the stress of returning to civilian life after deployment, while
also helping the Army National Guard units transition from their federal mobilization
status back to state control. Previously when National Guard units returned from
deployments they were given 90 days off. The new program now requires soldiers to
attend paid weekend programs at 30, 60, 90 day intervals after their return from a
war zone. The events are held at non military locations and families are invited to
participate to provide a chance to share experiences and talk frankly with each other
and counselors about their experiences.
