Pelham Hall of Honor Committee Planning Inaugural Awards, Seeks Nominations by March 23rd

Pelham is a community that has a long and proud history.  The schools have produced graduates that have made
important accomplishments in a wide variety of fields.  The faculty has contained extraordinary teachers who
dedicated their careers to the community.  Quite a few Pelhamites have given of themselves in service to our
country.  Many have provided years of dedicated service and leadership to community organizations.

We ask your help in nominating individuals to our committee who you believe deserve to be recognized through this
program.

The Pelham Hall of Honor Program Committee, established in September 2008 to honor the achievements of
Pelham Memorial High School graduates and Pelham residents who have made extraordinary contributions either
nationally or locally, has announced the opening of its nomination period for the 2009 inaugural awards.

We invite Pelham former and current residents to nominate eligible candidates by sending a biographical summary
and photo of the candidate to the Pelham Hall of Honor Program Committee by March 23rd.

The Pelham Hall of Honor award, criteria for the program is:

1. Graduated from PMHS and/or attended any Pelham school,

2. A resident of Pelham or Pelham Manor for a substantial period of their lives,

3. A Pelham Schools faculty or staff member, or a past member of the Board of Education,

4. Career domonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in careers or public service over an extended period,

5. Their life's work demonstration the quality and values of their Pelham education,

6. Provided selfless service which benefited the community and nation,

7. Provided extended leadership to professional or community organizations,

The Pelham Hall of Honor Program Committee plans to recognize from one to six individuals annually, with at least
50% being graduates of the Pelham school system. The first group of honorees will be recognized at a public event
this spring and be listed on a plaque displayed at PMHS and on a Pelham web site. One or more of the honorees
will be asked to give a talk to Pelham students about their achievements and what led to their success. Nominees
not selected in a given year will be eligible for consideration in the following year.  We are targeting the first awards
presentation for early June.

“The reason we are establishing this Hall of Honor is the realization that many stories of Pelham natives or residents
have been lost, are not available on the internet, or have never been recognized".  commented Committee Chair
Kenneth G. Kraetzer, a PMHS graduate in 1975 and whose family attended Pelham schools as far back as when
Siwanoy School served as the high school.  “Fortunately, during the Memorial Day town ceremony, we now read
aloud the stories of Pelham veterans. But there are many others who also deserve to be remembered. For
instance, does anyone remember the PMHS graduate who played in the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl?”

The Pelham Hall of Honor Program Committee will announce its first class of award recipients in April.

Members of the Program Committee, who represent a cross section of Pelham organizations, include David
Acocella, Betty Bucher, Martin Ketels, Tom Morrissey, Daragh Murphy, Marilyn Stiefvater and Todd Zuzulo. Support
for the project is being provided by the Foundation of LCDR Florence Lahey Ollinger, a 1937 graduate of PMHS.

The Program Committee invites residents who are interested in joining its selection committee to send an e-mail to
pelhamhallofhonor@gmail.com for more information.
