Pelham, NY: American Legion Post 50 Commander Dennis McEntee presented the American
Legion Medal for Military Excellence to six members of the Providence College ROTC Patriot
Battalion on Saturday April 24th at the Stones Ranch Military Reservation in Lyme, CT.
The cadets receiving the awards, all students at Providence College, were Senior Patrick
Motto - South Windsor, CT; Junior Julie Conway - Cranston, RI; Junior Katharine Broyer -
Stowe, MA; Junior Robert Thorne - Valley Stream, NY; Junior David Behm - Faribault, MN
and Freshman Michael Miller - Berlin, CT. Each honoree received a Department of Defense
approved medal and ribbon to wear on their military uniforms, and a certificate of merit from
the American Legion presented in honor of Pelham Post 50 member and WWII veteran, LTC
Kenneth G. Kraetzer US Army (ret).
The awards were based on the color guard presentation the six students conducted on
December 9th at Madison Square Garden in New York City prior to the Jimmy V Classic
basketball game between Providence and the University of Illinois. The appearance of the PC
Color guard for this game was arranged and inspected by members of Pelham Post 50 and
Sons of the American Legion.
LTC Stephen T. McGonagle US Army, Professor of Military Science at Providence College,
and head of the Patriot Battalion ROTC program, oversaw the ceremony which was conducted
while the cadets took a short break in their nearly nonstop weekend of field operations and
drills. The overall exercise was supervised by the program’s seniors and designed to ready
the underclassmen for summer courses they will take with ROTC students from around the
country. Cadets in the ceremony wore their field boots, helmets, camouflage paint, and battle
dress uniforms.
The American Legion Post 50 delegation was invited to observe several hours of the exercises
and was impressed with the intensity of the training which involved night operations,
ambushes, and an assault up a hill defended by Rhode Island National Guard members
recently back from overseas duty in Iraq and Cuba. The delegation noted the amount of
experience being handed down to the cadets from the officers and instructors several of whom
had over thirty year’s military experience.
Patriot Battalion ROTC Dept. is based at Providence College in Rhode Island and serves
students at several area colleges. The unit has had over 70 of its alumni serve recently in
Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, or Haiti.
American Legion Post 50 NY has over 125 members and actively supports service men and
women overseas by sending packages, letters and email. The Post runs the Town of Pelham’s
annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony commemorating the 83 residents lost in military
service during four wars of the Twentieth Century. Members of the Post are active in
entertaining veterans being cared for in Veterans Administration facilities and supporting youth
programs such as Boy’s State.
