SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION

& SOUND SHORE MEDICAL CENTER HONOR MILLIE EVANS

Widow of Korean War hero is herself an unsung hero, celebrating more than 48 years of service to the New Rochelle hospital.

Pelham, NY – December 16, 2009 – Pelham Post 50 and Sound Shore Medical Center will hold a reception on Thursday, December
17th at 2:45PM in the hospital’s Schaffer Lounge to honor Mrs. Millie Evans, a valued employee since 1961.

Mrs. Evans began her career at the hospital in the mail room, worked as a unit clerk for 13 years, and works in the Nursing
Administration Department handling nursing payroll, a position she has held for the past 34 years.

Millie is the widow of Lieutenant Eugene Lee Evans (Pelham, NY), an Army veteran killed in action on July 19, 1952 during the
Korean War;  they had been married for only two weeks when he was reported missing. He was awarded many top honors including
the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and the Korean Service Medal.

Lt. Evans was one of Pelham Memorial High School's best athletes, a four sport star in baseball, football, basketball, and track – at
the time, many thought he could have gone pro.  Instead, he joined the US Marines when it was still segregated at the end of WWII.
After his discharge, he went on to attend Morgan State College (Baltimore, MD), starring on their national championship football
team in 1949.  One of the first graduates of Morgan’s trailblazing Army ROTC program, Eugene married Millie shortly before leaving
for the Korean War, and was killed when he volunteered to conduct a dangerous scout mission across enemy lines before a major
battle.  He was honored this past June as an inaugural member of the Pelham Hall of Honor, which honors graduates of the Pelham
schools and residents of the community.
