Post 50 in Pelham to Host Commemoration of 65th Anniversary of Battle of Leyte Gulf on Saturday,

The Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Post 50 in Pelham will honor the 65th
Anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, which was fought October
23-26, 1944. The public and all veterans are invited to attend this recognition of a decisive
moment in American history.
Keynote speaker: Captain Gary A. Maynard, U.S. Navy.
Commanding Officer, Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colt's Neck N.J.
Professor Robert Castelli, John Jay College, and Vietnam Veteran, will discuss General
Douglas McArthur and his return to the Philippines.
Jessica Williams, Curator of History, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will present the
Intrepid as a lasting memorial to WWII heroes in NYC.
Following conclusion of the speaking program, a wreath will be presented at the adjacent Pelham
Veterans Park in honor of Pelham veterans who died at Leyte Gulf and in the ensuing fight to
liberate the Philippines. Ensign John Mathew Ring, Navy pilot who flew off the carrier U.S.S.
Langley. Lt. William Ogden, a member of the 20th Infantry Division, 6th Infantry Division died
liberating the Philippine Island of Luzon on February 2, 1945.
The organizing committee is very anxious to learn of other area natives and residents who served
at Leyte Gulf. All veterans will be recognized at the event.
