PELHAM POST 50, THE AMERICAN LEGION, ANNOUNCES A COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER FOR
CANINES FOR VETERANS
Pelham Post 50, The American Legion is proud and pleased to announce the start of its
fundraising event to raise awareness and funds for Canines for Combat Veterans. This
program is dedicated to fund service dogs, and their necessary training, for veterans
returning from recent wars, for those who have been injured in military accidents and
those veterans who suffer continued disabilities from past conflicts.
Service dogs partner with veterans with physical disabilities or various degrees of
deafness, to enhance independence and social interaction, especially in public
situations. These dogs are trained to perform for the veteran, such physical tasks as
providing balance when walking, helping transition to artificial hands, arms and legs,
using a wheelchair, retrieving and carrying objects, pressing buttons, opening doors,
turning lights on/off, assisting on ramps, and responding to sounds for those who are
heard of hearing. These assistance dogs become an extension of their veteran in need,
and bring security, freedom, independence and relief from social isolation to their human
partner. Simply speaking, it allows them to live fuller and happier lives, thereby creating
the emotional support for men and women who have sacrificed limbs, hearing, mental
capacities and normal life experiences so that we can continue to enjoy the freedom and
liberties that permeate every part of our Pelham lifestyles.
Dr. Greg K. Gibbs, PhD., a professor at St. Bonaventure University, has, with his students,
researched a number of papers which have studied the benefits of service dogs. The
summary conclusion states the following: “ The positive effects of service dogs is not
largely disputed in any of the literature, the degree to which they can be effective may
differ from study to study but all the works presented here have overall stated positive
impacts in behaviors, feelings and other psychological factors. There appears to be a
high demand for trained dogs and a rather low supply. Training remains expensive but
having a service dog may actually decrease the expense that a patient incurs and also
decrease their financial burden on society. Less caretaker time and increased
psychological and health functioning are well documented. There truly is much potential
here.”
Pelham Post 50 is partnering with NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, a non-
profit corporation, recognized under Section 501c(3) of the IRS Code. Contributions are
thus tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. NEADS receives no state or federal
funding and relies on contributions from community support and a private donor base,
including individuals like yourself, to provide fully trained assistance dogs at no cost to
qualified veterans. NEADS national headquarters is located in Princeton, Massachusetts
and is the oldest and largest assistance dog program in the country, having trained well-
over 1,000 assistance dog teams since its founding in 1976. Complete information about
NEADS and the dogs it provides can be found online at www.neads.org or by calling them
at 978-422-9064.
The cost to provide a fully trained service dog is approximately $20,000. While this is a
substantial sum, the daily benefit to the veteran owner is “priceless”. In the next few
weeks, the Pelham community will be receiving a letter and brochure outlining some of
the successes of this important program. Your generous donation in response to this
appeal, will help partner a qualified veteran with an individually trained service dog. For
a unique gift idea or for a special memorial you can participate in the NEADS Name-a-
Puppy Program. With a $1,000. tax-deductible donation, you can name one of the newly
arrived pups entering the nursery and early training center at NEADS. There are also
several adopt-a-dog and sponsorship donation programs available.
