Participation in New York Mets 9-11 Ceremony
Post 50 members and its Sons of the American Legion detachment organized
participation of the American Legion in the NY Mets 9-11 ceremony held on Sept.
10th 2006 at Shea Stadium.  The ceremony began with the playing of a hymn,
"Here's to the Heroes" by the "Ten Tenors", a joint NYC Services color guard
presented colors behind the pitchers mound, a NYC Bag Pipe Band played
"Amazing Grace".  James Casey, State Commander of the American Legion, SAL
Commander Al Deichler, and Queens Aux President Penny Walsh led the
procession of a large American flag and three color guards on to the field.
Pelham's large American flag was presented with the assistance of eight active
duty members of the US Marine Corps and US Army.   The ceremony was
conducted in front of more than 47,000 in person and televised in both New York
and Los Angeles by the stations covering the game which followed between the
Mets and Dodgers.  Post 50 would like to offer its appreciation to the new York
Met organization for inviting the American Legion to contribute to this ceremony.
